Hazel explained that whilst researching the origins of the National Trust she discovered the amazing life story of Octavia Hill.
Born in 1838 Octavia grew up with ambitions to become a social worker. At 21 years of age she had bought her first tenement block and set about reforming the building and the lives of the tenants. At the age of 36 she owned 15 Tenement Blocks and was responsible for three thousand tenants.
Her interest in the Open Space Society led her to become a founder member of the National Trust.
Mrs Penny Stephens thanked Mrs Gillingham for her informative and fascinating talk about an amazing lady.
Barbara Furber won the Bloom of the Month, and the competition (a National Trust item) was won by Tina Evans.
