Sparkling Final Effluent

(from Baydon)

You may have noticed the heavy vehicle activity leading off the lower end of Manor Lane earlier this year.

The Thames Water Board has been busy improving our sewage works. They have been quick to assure us that the existing system was very adequate and processed the water to the required standard.

However the site lent itself to a new “polishing” plant. A reed bed has been installed to bring the treated water to a higher standard – a sparkling final effluent that will soak away into the water table below. The existing plant will continue its work, but then will pass the water into the reed bed.

This was felt to be the best option because it requires no power and little or no maintenance.

Once the reeds are fully established they hopefully will become a haven for wild life, birds and insects etc. as well as providing cleaner water.

This improvement is not being introduced everywhere so Baydon is very fortunate.

The lorries may have been an inconvenience for a time, but I am sure you will be pleased to hear that Thames Water are striving to improve our environment.
